Presentations for Professional Mental Health Providers

On depression

One- and two-day presentations consider the treatment of depression using a case formulation approach. The two-day presentation (recommended) offers a model of intervention that takes into account the current state of the literature on depression, and provides specific recommendations for selecting from the array of potentially useful treatments identified as being effective in the empirical literature.

A two-day presentation on the use of a structured psychoeducational group protocol is also available. Those practitioners wishing to offer group intervention for depression will learn a distinct cognitive behavioral model complete with manuals for the client and the therapist.

On assertiveness training

A two-day workshop covers the provision of group assertiveness training using The Assertiveness Workbook as a text for clients. Participants experience most of the client exercises first-hand, and receive copies of an extensive trainer's manual and photocopy masters of all of the materials required to run an assertiveness training group.

On the treatment of depression in primary care

A half-day or full-day workshop for primary care physicians on nonpharmacological adjunctive treatment to depression. Includes a rationale for effective nonpharmacological intervention (and combined approaches), and provides attendees with a Clinician's Guide and photocopy masters of a Client Manual.

On sexual orientation issues in healthcare

Clinicians are increasingly aware of the importance of tailoring their interventions for different groups. This one-day workshop offers professional caregivers an overview of the issues in providing service to nonheterosexual minority clients. Topics covered include: An introduction to gay and lesbian culture, issues related to coming out, a review of the legal issues associated with nonheterosexual acitivity and relationships, health and mental health related correlates of sexual orientation, and ways of tailoring service delivery for nonheterosexual clientele.

On other topics

Presentations on topics related to the anxiety disorders, cognitive behavior therapy, and the dissemination of effective treatments are also available.

Presentations for the General Public
On depression

Single-evening and full-day workshops are available for individuals wishing to learn more about the nature of depression. Not intended as treatment, these presentations are designed to offer the individual an opportunity to learn more about depression and the coping and treatment options available.

On assertiveness

One- and two-day programs are available to assist individuals in exploring their own styles of communication and to assist in the development of greater comfort using an assertive approach. Though not intended as treatment, these skill-building workshops are designed to provide participants with experience and insight into the barriers that prevent them from being assertive more often, principles of nonverbal behavior, ways to express opinions without squelching those of others, methods for receiving and providing effective feedback, and strategies for making (and refusing) requests.

On stress management

One- and two-day programs are available designed to provide participants with greater insight into the nature of stress, its positive function and sometimes negative results, the ways that stress impact on their own lives, and techniques to alleviate its effects (including diaphragmatic breathing and other relaxation strategies, as well as more active methods). Useful for organizations undergoing difficult change procedures.
