depression mapYour Depression Map: Find the source of your depression and chart your own recovery

Now available in stores. There are dozens of recommended strategies for dealing with depression. Which should you try? The answer depends, to a great extent, on the type of depression you have and the risk factors that seem to have contributed. Your Depression Map leads you through an exploration of your own experience of depression, then uses the information gained to help you structure a personalized treatment approach. Published October 2002 by New Harbinger Publications, this large-format workbook includes a number of forms and measures. This part of the site offers an introduction to the book and downloadable versions of many of the forms and exercises. Purchase Information

assertiveness workbookThe Assertiveness Workbook: How to express your ideas and stand up for yourself at work and in relationships

Published in 2000 by New Harbinger Publications, this large-format workbook considers two primary questions: "What holds us back from being assertive?" and "What are the specific skills required for effective assertive communication?" This section of the site provides an excerpt from the book, the text of a review, and downloadable versions of several of the forms and measures included in the book. Purchase Information

self-care depression programThe Self Care Depression Program

Imagine that your family physician has just diagnosed you as having depression, but the insurance reimbursement scheme sharply limits the amount of time he or she can spend talking to you about it. Imagine further that a referral to a mental health specialist will take weeks or months. This is the situation in jurisdictions across North America. In response, Dr. Dan Bilsker and myself wrote a brief guide to depression designed to be handed out in the physician's office as part of an effort to provide more information to patients. The guide is now available as a downloadable pdf file from several locations on the Internet - including this one. This file requires Adobe Acrobat reader. Changeways Treatment Manuals

Changeways Clinic provides professional training programs in evidence-based mental health. Changeways' treatment manuals are offered for sale from its website, www.changeways.com. Included are:

  • The Changeways Core Program. The group treatment program for depression being offered at outpatient mental health clinics across Canada as well as in Australia, China, and England. Both an 86-page Client Manual and a 184-page Clinician's Guide are available. The client manual is available in English and Chinese.
  • Being There: The Changeways Assertiveness Program. The assertiveness training group program that inspired The Assertiveness Workbook. The 128-page Client Manual and the 251-page Clinician's Guide are both available.
  • The Changeways Relaxation Skills Program. When the Core Program was originally evaluated, we discovered that none of our clients were benefiting from the relaxation skills module. Our suspicion was that we just weren't spending enough time on the training, so we developed a six-session group protocol focussed exclusively on relaxation skills. The 185-page Clinician's Manual includes 45 pages of information handouts for clients -- which are also available in Chinese. In addition, we have progressive muscle relaxation and passive relaxation audiotapes available in English, Spanish, Cantonese, and Mandarin.
