The Unnatural Entrepreneur: 10 Tips for a Successful Life in Private Practice

Sponsored by the Ontario Psychological Association as a part of their annual virtual convention.

Times given are for Ontario’s Eastern Time Zone.

A large proportion of psychologists find themselves working in private practice settings despite receiving virtually no training during their graduate years in the mechanics of running a business. Many even resist the idea that their practice IS a business despite prima facie evidence to the contrary, and experience the veracity of the maxim “If you don’t treat it like a business, it will not be a successful one.” For the benefit of our clients and ourselves, it is essential to overcome both fear and distaste and embrace this aspect of our careers in an ethical, appropriate, and sustainable manner. This presentation offers ten concrete recommendations for those contemplating or currently in the midst of private practice. These range from branding to practice definition to financial tracking to referral management to personal sustainability. There is absolutely no need to attend this talk, however. Every private practitioner will learn these lessons one way or another: through painful experience, or by listening to someone else’s painful experience. Your choice.
